Since 1996 approximately
300 individuals from all walks of life have
graduated from the Sheriff’s Citizens Police Academy. Instructors for the
academy include deputies from the Sheriff’s Office, as well as individuals from
other agencies. The goal of the academy is to give citizens a realistic view of
the criminal justice system, as well to enable deputies and other instructors to
receive feedback from citizens.
Academy topics cover several areas of the Sheriff’s Office and Criminal
Justice System, and include arrest procedures, criminal law, investigations,
domestic violence, juvenile law, telecommunications, the corrections
division, traffic stops, D.U.I. enforcement, and mock trials. Many of these
topics include optional hands on involvement by members of the academy. The
Academy meets on Thursday nights beginning in each January for 10 consecutive
Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the DeKalb County Legislative
Center, 200 N. Main Street, in Sycamore. Application Form when available
